This morning start very common for me. The same things that I'll repeat it every day. Nothing much that can make my day a little bit different than others. Or maybe there is my day, my life are already different than others and I actually just don' realize it. My ramblings this morning after I ate so much this morning. After I've done cleaned the shop which was my working place now..

Well, there is something coming through my brain right now.. Ok, when we look at the our music industry nowadays, independent scene or indie or also we called it a DIY (do it by yourself) products dominated our music scene, I meant what I look onto the winning of Meet Uncle Hussien in Ajl23 stage (Malaysia), Estrange in Ajl22 (Malaysia), Death Cab for Cutie in the Grammy Awards (foreign) and the others independent artist that had been stand on the same level, archived the same or more success than the major artist.

In my country, Malaysia, we can see the independent artists had be in the peak of craze by the public nowadays and the question is after this era, independent scene, what will be the next? A couple years in Malaysia lately, independent scene seem to be an evolution for the Malaysia's music industry and it coming with it's new wave, fresh sounds. Maybe that are what the publics and music lovers want to and that make indie artists grown more and more..

Independent scene also been craze by the teenagers and many of them that have the ambitions to be an artist will choose the independent style. Again, my second question, will the independent scene in Malaysia will be dead? The music lovers in Malaysia will get bored because of heard the same songs, same sounds, same style? I hope not! I wrote this because in my tiny heart I keep my ambitions, to form a DIY band one day. And those questions keep coming to my head when I thinking about indie scene.

Ok, when we look onto the flows of music in Malaysia, started it with traditional music like Zapin music and dance and it used to popular trough Malaysia, then, Ghazal from Arabia also used to popular in the markets and malls of Kuala Lumpur and Johor and stars like Kamariah Noor are very success, later follows by Dondang Sayang, slow style.

Then the earliest pop music 'Tudung Periuk' sung by Momo Latif and P. Ramlee became the most popular singer and composers at that time with songs like 'Azizah', 'Dendang Perantau' and the evergreen 'Di mana Ku Cari Ganti'. Later come the pop yeh-yeh, the influenced by the British rock n roll and 'The Beattle' and song title 'Suzanna' sung by M. Osman in the 1964 seem to come in the fresh style with the band (kugiran) style..

And the flows will continue.. and continue... What's next?

p/s: the images definitely doesn't match with the post.. huhu.. :p

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3669273475152255706.post-88727509211542115862009-03-21T01:11:00.000-07:002009-03-21T01:20:04.307-07:00Review - Hacienda by Hacienda
The band is Hacienda and it’s a family affair, with brothers and a cousin making the kind of infectious, rootsy rock and roll that makes you wish you were living in some bygone time period where bobby socks and soda fountains were the norm, not online gaming and cell phones. It’s music that makes a person want to move their hips in bizarre and new ways though there’s no cognizant recognition that any of it is happening, just the spontaneous movement that springs from the ears comprehending what Hacienda is bringing to the table. It’s a home-cooked meal. It’s getting into a bit of a scrap. It’s wearing tight blue jeans and it’s smoking hand-rolled cigs. It’s a dirty and raw version of all of the amazing things that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Elvis Presley presented when they were walking and singing. It’s all that you can ask for in music that needs to felt, more than described, that needs to be witnessed to appreciate. It’s all inside – a direct reflection of the heart shining like it means it, the feet jittering as if they’re out of control and the sweat glands getting a workout.

There is something to get excited about in south-central Texas. In fact the buzz surrounding San Antonio's Hacienda may signal a rebirth of young rock n' roll -with emphasis on the "roll"- to the country's landscape. Formed by cousins Abraham Villanueva (piano/vocals) and Dante Schwebel (guitar/vocals), together with Abraham's brothers Jaime (drums/vocals) and Rene Villanueva (bass/vocals), this Mexican-American quartet blends a raw yet sophisticated style of pop music with harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles and Beach Boys. As fate would have it, a demo of 6 songs landed in the hands of Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, and the band's life was forever changed. Soon after they were opening for The Black Keys in Austin Texas, as well as for Dr. Dog, gaining some much needed exposure. Under Auerbach's watch, Hacienda would write and arrange more than twenty songs, sending him demos periodically in preparation for their debut album, ultimately recording in Dan's own studio in Akron, Ohio.

In order to keep the integrity of the music, "Loud Is The Night" was largely captured live in the room with a helping hand from new friends Scott and Frank of Dr. Dog. With them they worked on existing vocal harmonies and created new ones, greatly embellishing the album. The result is a beautiful collection of songs played with integrity and soul to spare, and while the band is aware of its 60's influences, the music on "Loud is the Night" is far from derivative, and the finished product is modern pop music performed with genuineness and taste.

Hacienda's official site
Hacienda on myspace

Hear them!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3669273475152255706.post-60521448248213604242009-03-21T00:19:00.000-07:002009-03-21T00:30:12.479-07:00Review - Those Darlins by Those Darlins
Those Darlins are a four-piece band from Tennessee, led by three absolute devils, firecrackers who could sweet-talk their way into as much trouble as they could handle. It happens so often in Darlins music that there’s no clear-cut understanding – the drinking’s always there as an elixir and as an anti-depressant candy. Well, independent label contracts typically resemble contracts offered by major labels because they have similar legal liabilities to define before representing an artist. There are slight differences, usually with regards to royalties. Independent Labels typically offer higher royalty percentages because production costs are usually significantly lower than those of a major label. For example, Independent labels tend to focus less on marketing than Major labels.

It is becoming increasingly more common for independent labels to offer a profit-sharing deal in which as mush as 40-75% of the net profits go to the artist. In this type of contract, the net gain after all expenses have been taken out are split between the label and artist by a negotiated percentage. However, deals in this form can take longer for an artist to gain any profit since all expenses - such as manufacturing, publicity, and marketing - are also taken into account. As an independent artist becomes more popular, deals of this type are more advantageous. Independent Labels can rely on "word of mouth" to expose their artists. This of course is to attract a distinct audience. Indie Labels tend to avoid high budget marketing, which is usually critized as "over kill" and attracts an audience commonly found following major label artists. This of course contributed to the lack of production cost, and helps artist to receive royalties sooner.

When a band goes on tour, it may or may not have the financial backing of its label. It is one of the few guaranteed ways to earn revenue for artists. Even touring is not a sure way to make money because it is possible that no one will attend the shows. Hailing from Leeds, the group consist of vocalist Ricky Wilson, Andrew 'White' White (guitar), Simon Rix (bassist), Nick 'Peanut' Baines (keyboardist), and Nick Hodgson (drummer). They were named the South African football club Kaizer Chiefs, a team which former Leeds United defender , Lucas Rabede played for. The group's debut album, Employment, was released in 2005. It was primarily inspired by new wave and punk rock music of late 1970's, and enjoyed international success with sales of over three million. In 2005, the album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Kaiser Chiefs' second album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob (2007), yielded "Ruby", a number one single in the United Kingdom.

Rewind the history about them, when they were around eleven years old, Nick Hodgson, Nick Baines and Simon Rix met in the same class at St. Mary's School, Menston in Bradford. After leaving school, Rix and Baines left for university in 1996 whereas Hodgson remained in the Leeds area, meeting both with Andrew White and Ricky Wilson. Hodgson, White and Wilson formed the band Runston Parva. It's a name a deliberate misspelling of a small Yorkshire village called Ruston Parva. After Runston Parva failed to secure a record deal, the group would re-form as Parva upon the return of Rix and Baines from university. Parva's career would go beyond the boundaries of Leeds, and the band was able to obtain both a record and publishing deal. However, after Beggars Banquets closed the Mantra label, Parva were dropped and left desolate and without any direction after the release of an album and three singles. The band decided that they would aim for a longer term record deal and started afresh with new songs and a new name; Kaiser Chiefs. The new name was taken from South African football club, Kaizer Chiefs, where former Leeds United captain Lucas Rabede had once played.

The group's debut album Employment was released in March 2005, being primarily inspired by new wave and punk rock music of late 1970's. The album was well received by music critics, described as "thrilling from the beginning to the end" and "quintessentially British, without pretension and most important, a whole lot of fun". It reached number two on the UK albums chart, and was certified five times platinum. In 2005, Employment was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, an anual music prize awarded for the best British or Irish album for the previous year. The first single released from the album was "Oh My God" in 2004, which reached number six on the UK singles chart when it was reissued in February 2005. In 2007, the song was covered by Mark Ronson and Lily Allen for Ronson's album Version. "I predict a Riot" soon followed as the album's second released. In 2007, the song was ranked number thirty-six on the NME "Greatest Indie Anthems Ever" countdown. The top twenty singles "Everyday I Love You Less and Less" and "Modern Way" followed in late 2005. The band opened and performed several of their singles at the Philadelphia Live Eight concert in 2005. The song "Saturday Night" was featured in a pre-release video for the XBOX 360 gaming console. It is worth remembering that this was during the start of the grunge era which managed to reach the shores of Malaysia in substantial force. It was while jamming in Kuala Lumpur during 1993 at Black Widow Studios which then they bumped into Emmet, who was there jamming (as a guitarist) with his band at the time, Grunge Dayz.

Impressed with what he saw, Loque then challenged Emmet to a ‘jamming showdown’, after which they mutually decided to blend in skills and creativity, to form their own band. After meeting up with the drummer Kalai later that year, Butterfingers was officially formed by the end of 1993. And with the final line-up of Loque (songwriter, guitarist), Emmet (vocals, guitarist, strings and lyricist), Kadak (bassist), and Kalai (drummer). Butterfingers hit the underground gig scene with vengeance that had most of their shows sold out and described today as “the stuff of underground legends”.
1.2 mg was released in 1996 to a reasonably strong and rapidly growing fanbase, (owing to the massive reputation the band had achieved during their years in the underground scene) with Nirvana-esque tunes, much like Silverchair was with their early album. The band was evidently most influenced by the Seattle scene which at the time was dying after the death of legendly-grunge, Kurt Cobain, and the evolution of Pearl Jam into more melodic, diverse and less angst-ridden band, among other things. The Malaysian youth however, were far from over with grunge and received 1.2 mg very well. The following year's release of their second album Butter Worth Pushful built their followers with more intricate, but still grungy, tunes. However, the 1999 album Transcendence, which showcased massive songwritting potential, that brought Butterfingers to the peak of their popularity. In many ways, it fulfilled the potential that was showed in Transcendence and acts as a testament of how mature the band had become at that point. The fans however, responded less and this affected the sale of the album, hugely due the fact that they were still in desire for three-chord, angst-ridden, grungy material. This was something the band wasn't willing to continue producing at the expense of musical growth and maturity. The band once remarked how they felt that while they have grown past grunge strictly as a musical genre, the fans have not. Nonetheless Malayneum is a landmark album for the Malaysian music scene simply because of its quality and originality. After a greatest hits album in early 2003, the band started working on the Malay language album Selamat Tinggal Dunia which was released in 2004. By this time many Malaysian bands singing in Malay were selling much well, earned more to the popularity of Indonesian indie bands in the country. In fact some band who previously sang in English, such as OAG, perhaps noticed the commercial potential, switched to Malay. Rock music in Malaysia was also under significant challenge from the hiphop scene with the emergence of groups such as Too Phat and Teh Tarik Crew who attained huge commercial success and popularity among the youth of the country. Some section of the Butterfingers' fanbase were slightly suspicious of the band's motives for recording a Malay album but once again they were defiant and demonstrated faith in their own visions of what they intended to produced.

Selamat Tinggal Dunia proved to be surprisingly original and any concerns of Butterfingers 'selling out' were put to a rest with its release. the album brought a new dimension to Malay rock with a mixture of controlled raw-ness and mature musical arrangements which was never meant to sell as well as the Malay or Indonesian bands that sang easy listening ballads which some critics have claimed to be lacking in depth. Even the words Emmett used on the album were 'alien', borrowing many terms associated with the Malaysian royalty. In interviews the band have said that this was a conscious move on their part to explore new grounds within Malay language music which they felt was becoming all too predictable. Emmett left for Canada to further his education before the release of Selamat Tinggal Dunia and there were rumours of Butterfingers breaking up or melting away (helped by the titled of the album itself which mean Goodbye World) but the band themselves have maintained that there is no real cause for such fears as they plan to continue working together as often and as best as they could. No matter the future outcome for Butterfingers, they have ridden the unique challenges as artists in Malaysia and most definitely stamped their mark as Malaysian music legends. While they were on hiatus, Loque continued his study in Boston, America. Loque had written several songs before and after he went for his studies. Most of these songs have been released as singles under the moniker Monoloque. The rest of the Butterfingers family played small, unplugged shows for their fans but with ex-Butterfingers, Azmir on the drums. Butterfingers was currently in midst of releasing their second Malay album titled Kembali which had released on 2008.

After the released of Kembali album on August 2008, Butterfingers made several shows to promote their newest album. Walla added that the album was "louder and more dissonant and.... abrasive." They claimed that they were influenced by "synth-punk band Brainiac." The album, titled Narrow Stairs, was released on May 12, 2008. The band released the first single, "I Will Posses Your Heart" from the album on March 18, 2008. It was met with plaudits from the band's official fan club, the DCFC Union, as well as some concern from more casual fans, saying the musical introduction, though powerful and emotive with the driving bass line, was too long. The major musical influences of Arctic Monkeys are Oasis, The Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age, and Roots Manuva. The lyrics of Arctic Monkeys' singles often feature social realism as typified by "A Certain Romance", which comments on chav and indie culture; and observations of working class life, as typified by "When the Sun Goes Down", described as a "witty, poignant song about prostitution in the Neepsend district of Sheffield". Based on their lyrical style, Arctic Monkeys have been compared to acts such as the British rapper Mike Skinner of The Street and earlier artist such as Steven Patrick Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker, both known of their combination of observational lyrics and humour. Alex Turner sings in a strong Yorkshire accent, typified by the contraction of "something" to "summat" (as summit or like summut), use of "dun't" (like dunt) instead of don't. Their songs also include frequent references to popular culture both common and obscure; What Ever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not includes references to Romeo and Juliet, "Roxanne" by The Police and Franks Spencer, from Some Mother Do 'Ave 'Em, leading one journalist to describe the band as having a "camp retro-futurist fascination" for 1980s popular culture. Arctic Monkeys have twice referred to Duran Duran in their lyrics. The first is in 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' ("Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand"). The second appears in the song 'Teddy Picker' ("Save it for the morning after" - a steal from the song 'Save A Prayer').
The popularity of the Arctic Monkeys in the UK, especially among young people, has led to politicians and journalist referring to the band in speeches and text. In May 2006, then-Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown stated in a interview with New Women magazine that he listened to them every day, claiming "they really wake you up in the morning", although in a later interview he was unable to name any of their songs. This has later been reported as a misquote. Subsequent interviews Brown has clarified that he said he didn't actually like them. He says he simply stated that they would certainly wake you up in the morning. He went to references this on his speech at the 2006 Labour Party Conference about the risk of global warming, joking that he was "more interested in the future of the Arctic Circle than the future of the Arctic Monkeys". Then, Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell also refered to the band at the 2006 Liberal Democrat Party Conference, mistakenly claiming that they had sold more records than The Beatles, a comment which led to much derision from the media. Helders and O'Malley have also expressed doubts about the Live Earth concerts in the 2007. My blog template was not suitable for my music-type blog and not the exactly what I want. When I mention here not suitable, that did not meant that the template was bad, but I actually had a space problem. I want to create a music-blog that really nice-looking to public viewers, has specific links that related to the related interest of viewers.
And after a while thinking, I was then inspires by one person that I had met on Blogcatalog (I don't want to mention the name), and discovered a really simple, awesome 3 column blog. In fact, I had posted the discussion on Blogcatalog to survey how the opinions of the professional one (pro-bloggers) on this topic (because I'm newbie on blogging). Many replied had been make by many of pro-bloggers there and there were many different thought on this topic, "2 column or 3 column". At the first, I was really hard to make the decision because from what I know (from what I read on Internet), if you were already used 2 column template that Blogger had provided to you then changed it to 3 column template, all the widgets that you put-on before will be gone.
I hate when my widgets gone and usually I forgot where to put it back or the site that provided that widget. If you were had been on my site before, there was a Technorati's button on my sidebar, and then it was gone when I changed the template. Dammit! I remember this one (Technorati) so I went to it on mission to get back that button, but I failed. I dunno whether Technorati did not provided that button anymore. It was a frustated moment because I really like that button (as decoration on my blog).. :p Although with all the problems, I still changed my blog to 3 column because I think, when we not try it, we'll never found the right one.
